This week not only do we celebrate 100 episodes of Verbal Brew goodness, but we also go back and revisit the year that was 2010. We take a look at the year in films, TV and video games along with any thing else that struck our fancy this year. And we also take some time to remember some of the worst which we looked at that inspire many of the profanity laced rants that you’ve all come to know and love. Happy New Year and see you in 2011!
We discuss a number of the year’s films including Inception, Machete, Harry Brown and Scott Pilgrim vs the World. We also look less fondly on the some of the worst of the year including Centurion, Alice in Wonderland, Skyline and I’m Still Here.
Best and Worst of TV 2010 (24:02 -36:45)
We also look at some highs and lows of the past year in television including Archer, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, V, Dexter, Sherlock and Fringe.
Best and Worst of Video Games 2010 (37:16 -58:06)
We’ve got a pile of different games that we look back on in our best of segment including Just Cause 2, Halo Reach, Miner Dig Deep and some mixed opinions concerning Red Dead Redemption.
On the podcast this week we have 2 games, Snoopy Flying Ace and The Force Unleashed 2 along with a look at the DVD release of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Developed by Smart Bomb Interactive, Snoopy Flying Ace is a downloadable game for the Xbox Live Arcade. The game sees Snoopy jump in the cockpit for some airplane combat that a lot of people have been comparing to Crimson Skies. Check out our review to see if it lives up to the comparisons.
Star Wars the Force Unleashed 2 (15:28 -38:09)
We had looked at the original Force Unleashed quite a few episodes ago and now the sequel is out for all the major consoles. This time Starkiller is back but now as a clone but still not seeing eye to eye with Darth Vader.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (38:23 – 60:49)
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World tells the story of boy meets girl, boy gets girl after boy fights seven evil exes. Directed by Edgar Wright, this film was originally released back in August in theaters and is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
This week we take a look at a recent summer film release with The Expendables. We also look at a downloadable game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. We also look at a BBC show, Sherlock. And we close things out with a look back at last weekend’s Toronto Fan Expo.
The Expendables (01:30 – 17:23)
As the summer movie season winds down we have only a few big blockbuster entries left. With The Expendables, Sylvester Stallone has assembled a who’s who of big time action stars for his tale of a team of mercenaries. Listen to our review to see if it’s living up to all the hype.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game (17:35 – 24:30)
Kevin brings us a video game release based on another recent film and comic series, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. With a similar art style to the comic books, the game is a side-scroller that lets you guide Scott as he battles the 7 evil ex-boyfriends of Romona Flowers. Developed by Ubisoft, the game is available for download on the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Live Arcade.
Sherlock (25:00 – 46:39)
We recently discovered this import from the BBC starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson. There are currently only three 90 min episodes but there are plans to release more in the fall of 2011. Check out our review to see if this a series worth your time.
Toronto Fan Expo recap (46:56 – 51:25)
Bill had a chance to check out the 3 day Toronto Fan Expo happening last weekend in, uhh, Toronto. He gives us the lowdown on some of the panels he checked out along with other sights of the expo.
Back on a previous show, we discussed at length, this sneak peek at some footage for the upcoming Predators film. Well, since then there’s also been a proper trailer released which I’m thinking looks like a pile of fun.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
I haven’t checked out the comic book series this is based on so I admittedly didn’t have much of a clue about this going in. That said this looks like it could be pretty cool. I’m a big fan of Edgar Wright so I’m always interested in what he’s doing. Plus it looks like we might get Michael Cera actually playing a different character. And if all else fails, I can just have fun spotting all the Toronto landmarks.
Tron Legacy
I wasn’t a big fan of Tron when I originally saw in the theater way back when. But I gave it a re-watch recently and I gotta admit the older version of me enjoys it much more. And this new trailer for the sequel? It looks pretty fucking sweet!
