A little explanation may be needed here. I was, besides other things, a ginormous G. I. Joe freak when I was a kid. As I got older I liked to reminisce about the good ol’ days of joe. It’s unfair of me I suppose to think that G.I. Joe as a franchise would age with me.
Now before you say anything I know that the whole concept of the Joe world is silly, but really thats what made it fun, “Cobralalalalala!” and all of that. But silly doesnt work all of the time. Im older, times are different and I want to call the Joes mine again.
Awhile ago I bought a Joe trade paperback for a friend of mine as a lark gift. I dont remember the exact one all I remember was that it was still silly and the art was ish. Again, it was lark gift, no harm no foul. Then the movie came out… if you want to know what I thought of that thing go here and listen… the short of it was I wasnt a fan.
I gave up on Joe being a child hood thing that I could bring into my adult hood with me and just enjoyed the fact that I had such great toys to play with as a kid.
Then the unthinkable happened, I had heard, via the grapevine of all things, that there were some solid and good Joe comics coming out by IDW.
“PA-leeze” I said. Doesnt happen, no one wants to make this an enjoyable read for anyone but kids, right?
So I go out and I buy G.I. Joe origins #12, you know as a lark. So what did I think? it was wonderful, great even… wait, Im getting ahead of myself.
First, this issue was written by Marc Andreyko with art by Ben Templesmith, though the cover seen here was done by Tom Feister. As I said before, it was published by IDW.
SO this book came out last week and because I wasnt expecting anything from it I didnt read it until today, so yes this review is a week late… get over it.
This is an incredible book. It is unlike any Joe book I have ever seen. Templesmith’s art is so unique that it’s hard to pass judgment on it, and I dare say that if you looked at his art outside of this book you would probably not think of him as someone who could do a Joe book.
The structure of his pages is very easy to follow and only once or twice was I a little thrown off by his art, taking me out of the story for a second.
now that we’re on the subject of story I dont want to be to harsh on Marc Andreyko because I think he does a great job with what he has and what he has is one issue to tell the origin story of the Baroness. He does it and it’s a fun read, but by the end of it I felt that this could have easily been two issues. The pace was a little too fast and at times felt like it was all just being thrown together to get it done and out.
With that said, I really did enjoy it. I enjoyed it so much that Im sure that I’ll be checking into the other issues as well as keeping a close eye on the IDW G.I. Joe world, as well as paying more attention to Templesmith who has an new book coming out from Image soon called Choker.
